It has been completely obvious throughout the novel that Johns intended victim was Polly. When he murdered Polly he didn't think about how that could effect anyone else. Polly's children lost a mother, and a father. Polly's parents lost their daughter. Polly's siblings lost a life time best friend. Jessie lost a husband. Jessie's child lost a father. With Johns one action he has spun everyone's lives around him out of control. Polly may have been the one who got murdered, but there were so many other who were hurt and effected by her death. Basically all the people who were personally involved with John, or Polly, or Jessie, or even their families are victims. They are all going to suffer from this. Everyone.
Polly and the children were not the only ones affected by johns selfish act. Theirs the grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other family members of Polly who lost her. On johns side johns parents and siblings lost him too. Also, Jesse lost her one true love. I don't think John really thought that things would end up this way. He didn't really think about whose lives he would be permanently changing. It's kind of like a domino effect. The action of one person affects the action of another which continues into a long chain of people who have been affected.
I agree with the statement wholeheartedly. Literally everyone who has been involved with the Wilsons or the Pattersons has been victimized. John's totally selfish act has torn apart two families. And to add insult to injury he doesn't seem sorry in the slightest.
Polly and her children were definitely not the only victims... Jessie is now left without a husband, and her child without a father. Polly's parents lost their daughter, and her siblings lost a sister. ALl of Polly's friends have lost a good friend, and her grandparents lost a granddaughter, and cousins lost a cousin.
All people acquainted to Polly and John had an impact towards them. Polly's parents, grandparent, children, and other families members and good friends are left to grieve her death weeks after her actual death. Jessie is left a widow, and her child with no father. Although she was the one who was murdered, it's her death that impacted everyone.
