Book Two, Chapter XLII

What do you think of Jessie's involvement in John's defence?

  1. I think that Jessie's involvement in John's defense is going to do more harm than good. The jury would most likely believe that John somehow swayed Jessie's judgement further than it already is, since she is his wife. You do have to have some degree of objectivity to be able to give an authentic testimony, and a spouse testifying, or just trying to defend their significant other in the case of another seems very unrealistic.

  2. Jessie's involvment probably just made the court laugh. The most common thought would be that John made Jessie defend him because she is his wife. Since he had done such a horrible thing to Polly, its not hard to believe that John could have threatened Jessie into doing it.

  3. I think Jessie's involvement in the case was a bad idea. Everyone is going to think she is bias because she loves him, is married to him, and is carrying his child. She is too personally and emotionally involved with John for her testimony to be valid. It would be hard to believe that after everything John has indirectly done to her, and all the lies he has told her that she would still defend him without being forced to.

  4. Even though Jessie is johns wife and loves him very much her involvement in the johns defence is unnecessary. John's done such an awful thing there's no way Jessie could just defend him after finding out everything. Everyone is probably confused because who would stand up for a man like John Wilson especially after what he did. Jessie should just not defend him and move on from him..it's what's best for her and the baby.

I believe Jessie's involvement was not helpful. John's action of killing Polly cannot be undone no matter what anyone says... People probably think Jessie is crazy for still having anything to do with John. Jessie needs to let go of John and not be attached because John will be punished for killing Polly and won't be able to be a good husband and father. Jessie shouldn't be with such a dangerous and lying man... It's not good for her and her baby.
