Book Two, Chapter XXXVIII

Describe the various strategies used by Superintendent Tracey, Inspector Smith, and Inspector Goldsmith to coerce John into a confession.   What do you think of the effectiveness of these strategies, both in this case and in general?

  1. The first strategy used was to try and intimidate John by using photos of Jessie and Polly to show that they knew all about the situation and about his personal life. Once that didn't work, they switched to a more personal strategy. They made John feel guilty for how he was making Jessie feel, and telling him that his actions could effect the baby. Although it's horrible, John seemed to care much more about Jessies health than his own wifes death. So I believe the guilt tactic worked best. Some people, like John, can put on a brave face but actually be hurting and vulnerable inside. They will act completely fine with the act of intimidation because they have learned to put on a brave face and deal with people trying to scare them. But once it becomes more personal, the words start to stab deeper and effect them more, making it easier to break them down and have them spill the information they want.

  3. The detective and inspectors used pictures of him and Jesse as well as Polly and the kids to try and get him to confess but of course he wouldn't. They then tried using his kids to get to him. They said things like," don't you think your kids deserve to know where their mother is?" They tried to make him feel guilty and come clean. The detective and the inspectors also used Jesse and their baby to get to John which worked because John cares about Jessie more than anything in the world. In cases like this when family is brought up especially if they are in danger or in need or help, it hits a soft spot for that person. Nobody wants to see anything happen to their family or loved one so think this tactic was the most effective.

  4. The detective and inspectors used guilt tactics to get John to confess, firstly by using pictures of Jessie and himself, then by using his children. Then the investigative team then tried to use Jessie and their child again, which I think was the final straw for Jack. He loves Jessie and his child with her more than anything, which made him finally crack, and tell the truth. Jessie is his Achilles' heel.

  5. The inspectors tried to use guilt to make John confess by showing him pictures of Jessie and his children. I think John deeply cared for Jessie and loved her more than he loved Polly, and so when the investigators brought her into the investigation, it was the straw that broke the camels back and he finally confessed.

  6. The detective and inspectors used guilt to make John confess about the murder, but it did not work. They used pictures and phrases that would make any person think twice of what they had done. When they used Jesse, that is what made John finally crack. He truly loved Jesse more than he loved Polly, which is why he had confessed.
