Book Two, Chapter XXXIV

In this chapter, John ponders why he didn't write to Polly's family that she had died of the flu, but he doesn’t know why.  What do you think? Do you think that he would have gotten away with the murder if he had? Why or why not?

  1. As much as this pains me to say this, I think that John definitely should have written to Polly's family just to cover for himself. I think that this mistake is going to be the beginning of the end for him. I definitely think that John would have gotten away with the murder if he had enough foresight to write to Polly's family.

  2. If John had told Polly's family and her friends in canada that she had died of the flu I think he may have gotten away with the murder. There is no reason to investigate whereabouts of a missing person when you think that they died naturally.

  3. I think maybe John was in such a hurry to cover the murder and make sure people never found out that telling Polly's family never really crossed his mind. I think there is a possibility that John would have gotten away with the murder because Polly's family would have accepted Polly's death and moved on. I also think that if John had told them Polly had died of the flu, they would want to go to her funeral and see her one last time to say their final goodbyes.

  4. I am not sure if John would have gotten away with the murder either way. If he were to write to Polly's family saying that she died of the flu they might question why he didn't write to them sooner, notifying them that she was deathly ill. Not to mention all the people in Canada that Polly had formed friendships with. Would John have a funeral? If he did would he use her body in the coffin? If he didn't use her body wouldn't people ask why? If he didn't have a funeral wouldn't people find that disrespectful and question why he didn't have one? What if Polly's family made a trip to Canada to see her body for some closure? What would he do if someone found out there were no hospital records? I believe that John would have gotten caught no matter what he did.

  5. I think John might have gotten away with the murder. There have been so many people sick and dying recently that it wouldn't have been much of a shock if she had died too. However, her family might have wanted to come see her body and say goodbye, maybe even have a funeral. They would be very curious why there wouldn't be a body to see if she had just died of the flu. So as long as they wouldn't have wanted to see her before she was buried, he could have gotten away with it.

I do think that John may have gotten away with the murder if he had told Polly's family she had died of the flu. At this time, many people were getting the flu, so it wouldn't seem unnatural or suspicious. Even if her family wanted to come to Canada and have a funeral, John could have buried Polly before they came so they wouldn't know what actually happened.
