I think that John taking the stand would have hurt his defense. John's web of lies has become a sort of time bomb that is going off in his face in slow motion. At this point, I think that there is nothing that could help, or even save John, honestly. He has completely and utterly, royally messed up this time. There is nothing that can be done for John now. Nothing.
Either way, I don't think it would have mattered. He has lied so much that no one has any respect left for him, and wouldn't listen to him if he had taken the stand. I don't think anything could change his fate now.
I think John taking the stand could have played out both ways. It would have hurt his defence if he took stand and thought somehow he could find a way out of this, and lied. I think if he took the stand with the hope of escaping his fate he would have been put under pressure and when he was asked questions he would mess something up in his stories, forget a small detail, or mention something he never had before. But I think if John went up there with the hope of redemption, and come clean in front of everyone, people may have respected him, or forgiven him for such awful crimes he committed. I suppose either way hurts his defense, but the latter at least helps him redeem himself in the eyes of all the people his actions impacted.
I think that John taking the stand would have hurt him. Being questioned left and right would have lost likely caused him to do what he knows how-lie. I think he probably would have come up with excuses as to why he did what he did. People already know that he's a continuous liar so they wouldn't have believed him anyway. John deserves everything he has coming to him for taking the life of his children's mother for his own selfish reasons. Had he been honest from the beginning things would have played out a lot differently but unfortunately John made poor decisions and got himself to wear he is now.
I believe that John taking the stand would not have helped him. The police have found so much evidence proving his action of killing his wife. Everyone also knows that John is a consistent liar and probably no longer have any trust or belief in him.
After his constant lies, I don't think any stand to his defense would be any help to him. The police have found so much evidence of Polly's murder and all the people surrounding him knows he's a liar.
