Book One, Chapters XII and XIII

Do you think that John is a convincing liar? Why or why not?

  1. From my view point I do not think that John is a good liar, however, those he is lying to have no way of verifying his claims. Also, people often believe what they want to believe, especially concerning someone they love or when the alternative would be unbearable.

  2. I think that John is a very convincing liar. He has been lying to everyone in Canada for years. He's got a whole backstory to support his lies and makes them very believable. I think that since John is a pathological liar, it has taught him to be a more convincing liar. When he first moved to Canada, Jesse and everyone he met we're strangers so telling them lies was easy and making it believable was even more easier. One day John is going to get caught in his act and he won't know what to do. There won't be a way to lie himself out of it. When that day comes, John will get the karma he deserves. Hopefully this will teach him a lesson and he can learn from his mistakes but John is such an unpredictable character. Nobody knows what he will do in that type of situation.

  3. The evidence supports that John is an incredibly talented liar. Convincing many people that he wasn't married and had no children. He even forged letters from his family to give to Jesse. But it will come back to bite him in the

  4. There is extensive evidence that John is an excellent liar, in that the people in Saskatchewan have believed his lies for years and years. It takes skill not only to weave such an extensive lie, but to maintain it as well. As Braedan says, this is going to blow up in his face soon.

  5. I think that John IS a convincing liar. He has been in Canada for years and had everyone convinced that he is a single man. However, people began rumours saying that he is married. Jessie's brother confronted him about this, but John was able to convince him that he was not married to Polly. John also wrote Jessie a letter and made her believe that it was from his sister. Even though John's lying is very wrong and hurtful towards others, he is good at it. However, lying always gets you into trouble eventually...

  6. Yes, I believe John is a very convincing liar. He is a fast thinker on the spot and is very eloquent. He has managed to convince everyone in Canada that he is a single man. He has even convinced himself that he is a single man. He has kept up and maintained his lies for 6 years in Canada, and that requires a great amount of skill. Lying is one of John's strongest characteristics, and eventually he will be exposed and have no way to cover it up.

  7. In the reader's perspective he is a terrible liar but in the book, he's very convincing. He's been telling everyone lies and all of them ate it up. He convinced Jessie to marry him and everyone he knew in Canda he had no familt in his home country. John still had Polly convinced of his loyalty, bet when he's discovered, he'll have no way to cover it up. ~Kamryn

  8. (Kaitlyn) I believe that John is a very good liar. He doesn't just speak falsely, he created fake letters to give to Jessie. He has lied for years with no one questioning his actions, however, there are no suspicious red flags that could make them think other wise.

  9. John is a good liar when it comes to his actual telling of lies, but he tells too many, and in order to tell a lie that's 100% believable, you need to add truth, but he doesn't.
