Jolissa- I don't think john has escaped his old life. He has found it more convenient to stay in Canada and therefore hasn't tried his hardest to get home. he sould be desperately be trying to enlist to get to scotland and doing odd jobs wherever he can to get home.
I think that John and Polly are headed for a divorce, or at least legal separation (if that even was a thing back then?). I do not agree with how he thinks he's done everything he can to get home. He's done nothing even remotely close to "everything he can".
I feel that John and Polly won't last because John isn't putting any effort into his family at all. He didn't do everything that he could to get home. Although he has no control over his health, he should explore other possible ways of returning to Scotland like finding jobs that will take him overseas.
John has already lied to his wife about how long he would stay in Canada for, and he has kept his life in Scotland a complete secret from all the new people he has met. He is acting as if his marriage is already over, he never writes to Polly anymore and I think that eventually he will completely stop writing all together, and stop trying to get back home. Once he realized living in Canada was better for HIM than living in Scotland his choice to stay there was basically made. He has definitely not done all he could to get back to Scotland. He enlisted a couple times but once they rejected him due to his health, he was done trying. The fact that he is having feelings for another woman while he is still married brings out his true character, and shows us how little he thinks about Polly. I think that he favours Canada over Scotland because he brought shame to his family in Scotland and now people look up to him and think he is an honest, loyal man.
I think John and Polly may separate in the future because he is interested in this 16 year old girl. John doesn't write to Polly and makes no effort to try and stay in contact with her and his family. He promised that he would write as much as he could, but he clearly didn't keep his promise. No one in Canada really knows about his old life. It seems like he wants to leave his old life in the past and wants to move on. If he had really done all he could to go back home, then he would have actually tried and put effort, but he didn't.
CASSANDRA - I feel as though the future holds nothing for John and Polly. He is stuck in Canada and she in Scotland. He is also seeing Julie. Because of this, I think that they will never be together again. I do not think that John had done all he could do to get back home. He should have kept on trying again and again to enlist in the army and work his absolute hardest, even if it involves getting a few jobs. He seems too focused with his police work instead of focusing on getting home.
It's obvious that when John left, Polly and John's relationship will go down hill. John had many opportunities to go back to Scotland, but wasn't desperate enough. He became interested to a young girl, which everyone knows where that will head with John's erratic character
John and Polly are not destined to be. He is stuck in Canada, while she is in Scottland. And she really is too good for him, he makes things much more difficult than they have to be, not to mention, he's not a good man.
