Book One, Chapters V and VI
What do you think of conscription? Some countries, including South Korea and Israel, enact conscription of approximately 2-3 years for males over the age of 18. Although the Canadian government did enact forms of conscription during times of emergency such as both World Wars, it is not currently legislated. Do you think it should be? Why or why not?
I think unless your country is desperate for soldiers then conscription should not be enacted. It is forcing young men to go to war against their will, even though they might not have what it takes to survive. I agree with conscription in the case of the World Wars because during that time all countries were involved and their was a high demand for soldiers. But I believe unless another world war happens it should not be allowed because although it is a good thing to fight for your country, it should not be a necessity. People have the right to choose if they want to fight or not.
ReplyDelete(Kaitlyn) I don't think that conscription should be legislated in Canada. People should not be forced to face war directly and to risk their lives. I feel that people should have a choice whether or not to defend their country with war and weaponry.
ReplyDeleteI think that conscription is a last ditch effort of a desperate country so that they don't fall; that it's cowardly. But not on the part of the men conscripted. It takes courage to serve your country and your fellow man.
ReplyDeleteI think that conscription is wrong. No one should be forced to fight in a war and risk their lives; it should be their choice. If someone is not ready for being a soldier, or has family at home that they need to care for, then conscription could be viewed as forced labour(slavery), which is immoral. Because of these reasons, I think that conscription should not be legislated in Canada.
ReplyDeleteI think that conscription is very dangerous especially for young men. They are being forced to do something that they aren't ready for. At the young age of 18, you still have your whole life to live, you shouldn't be forced to risk your life. I don't think that conscription should be legislated because it is too risky and dangerous for the individual. If a person is going to fight in a war, they should have the option of deciding for themselves, not be forced into doing it.
ReplyDeleteI think conscription should only be used when the country and its citizens are in direct danger of falling to a destructive power. However, soldiers should have the choice to serve without using weaponry for moral reasons.
ReplyDeleteI think conscription should only be used as a last resort. Young men shouldn't be forced to go to war, especially when they are young and they tend to have irrational thinking (Which is known amongst most young people). Although, they should have the choice to go, to protect their country and fellow soldiers. ~Kamryn
ReplyDeleteThis is a delicate subject for me. As I have witnessed myself, being in the army can really improve one's appreciation for reliability, gentlemanliness, and other important things that make a person well rounded. I have also experienced the effects of those who have been in war, and return with PTSD. There are good and bad effects of being in the army, and truly I believe that conscription is a good thing. Not everyone that is conscripted must go to war, but everyone that is learns importance of reliability, gentlemanliness, etc.
