Book One, Chapters III and IV

In these chapters we hear of the propaganda that was used to entice Europeans to come to settle in Canada. Do you think that propaganda is ethical? What other examples of propaganda can you think of?

  1. I think that some propaganda is ethical, but only if it used for the benefit of all people. For example, the Uncle Sam posters used during the First World War were propaganda, as well as the posters promoting antisemitism in Nazi Germany.

  2. (Kaitlyn) I don't think that the propoganda is ethical because it is deceptive. They say that Canada is the perfect place to come to because there are resources but the Europeans will probably not be able to easily have access to those resources.

  3. I think that propaganda can be ethical if it is not being used in a hateful or violent way. Businesses use propaganda all the time to sell products. Tv ads use propaganda to open people's eyes to things such as car accidents in hopes of helping people make smart choices about driving.

  4. I suppose propaganda can be ethical. If used in positive way. But most of the time it is used in a negative deceptive way

  5. I think that propaganda is not ethical. It is wrong to lie to the public and influence some level of negativity or harmfulness. If there are negative factors to something being advertised, then they should be mentioned. An example of bad propaganda is advertising alcohol. In commercials, they make alcohol look as though if you drink it, you will be happy and people will be more attracted to you. However, they never mention anything about the side effects of alcohol such as hangovers, puking, or alcohol poisoning.

  6. No, propaganda is not ethical. It's not much different from a kind of censorship. The government should never intentionally mislead people. As far as I'm concerned lying to people is a bad thing, even if it's done with the best of intentions. Nazi Germany instituted an effective but deadly propaganda campaign that convinced German citizens they were the master race and that Jews and other groups must be eliminated.

  7. Supposedly, Propaganda can be ethical from time to time. In the past, propaganda was mainly used to selfishly advertise the point of view from political leaders. Propaganda can be used for good, to give pieces of information that can help people in specific situations. Whether it's bad or good.

  8. I believe that there are different types of propaganda, ethical propaganda, such as propaganda promoting reading; unethical propaganda, such as using sex to entice viewers in a car commercial; and ethically grey propaganda, such as promoting a different country as something that it is not, like the example we read from Sgt John Wilson.
