I notice that John's letters to Polly are written like the way one would speak to a butler, or slave, whereas John's letters to Jessie are written the way one would speak to their lover. John is slowly starting to distance himself from Polly and move more towards Jessie, something that could have dire consequences for all parties involved.
John's letters to Jessie are heartfelt. He addresses them, "my dearest Jessie." Whereas he addresses Polly with just, "dear Polly." John is falling in love with Jessie and out of love with Polly. You can already tell by the way he writes his letters. - Jared
When John writes letters to Jesse, the are sweet and romantic. In his letters to her he talks about how much he loves Jesse and how amazing their life is going to be. In his letters to Polly, they are like a letter you would write to a friend. As John and Jesse fall more and more in love, John and Polly get more distant and don't feel that connection they once felt for each other.
