Book One, Chapter XV

Describe John's strategy for maintaining his double life.  Do you think his strategy is effective? Why or why not?

  1. John's strategy for maintaining his double life is a very shaky one, one that doesn't really hold up if one thinks about it. This double life of John's is going to blow up in his face soon. This strategy is effective, but only for a short while, because one can keep lies up for only so long.

  2. I think his strategy is ineffective and will undoubtedly blow up in his face. He maintained his double lives for a few years and that was luck. But now that Polly is in Canada and she knows about him and Jessie, his double lives are starting to slowly fall apart. He is digging a hole deeper and deeper for himself and I believe he will lose everything that he has worked so hard (by lying) to get if he doesn't come clean. I don't think John has a conscience, guts, or courage to come clean. I think he'll keep digging his hole of lies until the end.

  3. John's strategy is to make sure his lies are more believable. Since he is a very good liar, he knows what he is doing and knows that no one will be able to tell that he is lying. His strategy is effective because he's kept up this double life for a long time. People still believe that John is not married and has no kids which is clearly not true.

  4. (Kaitlyn) Johns strategy is to lie his way through life so that he doesn't have to choose between things that he wants. His strategy is ineffective because we can see that it is slowly falling apart as his double lives are starting to get closer and closer together. He has lied through this whole thing for years, and it won't be easy to climb out of the hole he has dug. Personally, I don't think that he will be able to do it, but rather attempt to fix it by lying even more.

  6. His maintenance of his double life was less than convenient. He kept Polly "in the loop" for a couple of years, before abandoning her. This led her to come visit him, which was the worst mistake. It will only get worse.
